What does it mean to follow Jesus?

A starting point for discipleship: hear Jesus, trust Him, learn His way, and put His words into practice.

In short

Following Jesus is more than agreeing with ideas about Him. In the Gospels, Jesus calls people to come after Him, learn His way, obey His teaching, and become people who help others do the same.

What Jesus said

Matthew 4:19; Luke 9:23–25; John 10:27; John 13:34–35; Matthew 28:18–20

Practice it

Read one Gospel with a pencil. Each time Jesus gives a command, invitation, warning, or example, mark it. Choose one concrete response rather than trying to master the whole book at once.

Context

Jesus called disciples before there was a modern church program to join. Discipleship was relational, embodied, demanding, and lived in ordinary life.

Interpretation

We understand discipleship as direct allegiance to Jesus that is strengthened by the body but cannot be outsourced to the body.
