A GUIDE FOR THE ROAD

Follow Jesus.

Read what he said. Watch what he did. Trust him. Put his words into practice. Help someone else do the same.

01

Begin with Jesus.

You do not have to understand everything before you begin. Start in the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—and let Jesus be more than an idea. Hear his words. Watch how he treats people. Notice what he says the Kingdom of God is like. Notice what he asks people to trust, leave, love, forgive, and do.

02

Read simply.

Take a passage at a time. Read enough to see the context. Before reaching for somebody else's explanation, ask:

  1. What does Jesus say or do here?
  2. What does this show me about God and his Kingdom?
  3. What is Jesus asking people to trust, turn from, receive, or do?
  4. What is one clear thing I can put into practice?

When something is unclear, keep reading. Compare the passage with the rest of Jesus' teaching. Let the clear words stay clear while you work on the difficult ones.

03

Keep the center in view.

Turn toward God and believe the good news.Mark 1:14–15

Love God with your whole life and love your neighbor as yourself.Matthew 22:34–40

Seek God's Kingdom first.Matthew 6:25–34

Love your enemies. Pray for people who mistreat you.Matthew 5:43–48

Forgive.Matthew 6:12–15 · 18:21–35

Serve rather than grasp for position.Mark 10:42–45

Care for people who are hungry, sick, vulnerable, imprisoned, or overlooked.Matthew 25:31–46

Love one another the way Jesus loved.John 13:34–35

Remain in Jesus and bear fruit.John 15:1–17

Hear his words and do them.Matthew 7:24–27

Help other people become disciples of Jesus.Matthew 28:18–20

04

Pray the way Jesus taught.

Jesus' pattern in Matthew 6:5–13 is enough to begin a life of prayer:

Father.Come to God as Father.

Your name.Begin with God, not yourself.

Your Kingdom. Your will.Ask for God's reign to become real in you and around you.

Daily bread.Bring today's actual needs.

Forgive us—as we forgive.Receive mercy and extend it.

Lead us. Deliver us.Ask for help against temptation and evil.

You can use those movements in a minute or an hour. Speak plainly. Listen. Return tomorrow.

05

Do the next clear thing.

Jesus compares hearing without doing to building on sand. Do not wait until you know everything. Practice the thing that has become clear.

  • If you need to forgive, begin forgiving.
  • If you have harmed someone, pursue reconciliation and make what you can right.
  • If someone is in need and you can help, help.
  • If you are hiding something, bring it into the light.
  • If Jesus' words challenge the way you use money, power, sex, anger, status, or attention, let him challenge it.
  • If you already know what love requires, do not substitute more studying for doing it.

Read → understand → do → return. Let that rhythm become ordinary.

06

Discern by Jesus and by fruit.

Not every confident voice deserves your trust. Jesus says a tree is known by its fruit (Matthew 7:15–20). When you are unsure about a teaching, leader, impulse, or spiritual claim:

  1. Does it agree with the clear teaching and character of Jesus?
  2. What kind of fruit does it produce over time?
  3. Does it move people toward love, truth, humility, mercy, faithfulness, courage, and obedience—or toward fear, domination, vanity, deception, and harm?
  4. Can it withstand prayer, Scripture, honest questions, and wise correction?

Jesus also promised the Holy Spirit as helper and teacher. Read John 14–16. Ask for help, remain teachable, and do not confuse intensity or certainty with truth.

07

Follow Jesus with other people.

You do not need a complicated program to begin. Gather around Jesus and practice shared life.

Read.Choose a Gospel passage and read it aloud.

Talk. What did Jesus say or do? What is clear? What is difficult?

Practice. Each person names one concrete response.

Pray.Pray for one another and for people beyond the room.

Eat.Share ordinary life, not only a meeting.

Care.Notice needs and carry burdens together.

Reconcile.Deal with conflict truthfully and directly. See Matthew 18:15–20.

Send.Help someone else follow Jesus. See Matthew 28:18–20.

08

When you get lost, return to Jesus.

You will misunderstand things. You will fail to do things you know. You may get distracted by arguments, personalities, movements, fear, or your own certainty.

Return. Tell the truth. Receive mercy. Repair what you can. Forgive. Begin again. Peter's story does not end with his failure; Jesus meets him again and calls him forward (John 21).

A simple rhythm for a lifetime

Read Jesus. Pray. Do the next clear thing. Love the person in front of you. Follow with others. Help someone else follow him. Then return to Jesus and begin again.
